Unit Three

1}ELAALRL4 The student employs a variety of writing genres to demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of significant ideas in selected literary works. The student composes essays, narratives, poems, or technical documents.

This standard wants me to understand the different types of writing, and to be able to point out the differences between them. This Standard also wants me to be able write different types of literature.

2} I think I am closer to being a Transcendentalism because they did not believe in original sin unlike the dark romantics. The Transcendentalists did not believe that the origianl sin committed by Adam and Eve made the rest of us sinners. They also believed that God could communicate to people through nature and a persons intuition. The dark romantics believed in original sin and that it was responsible for the evil that existed inside of everyone. I believe everyone has atleast a little bit of good in them and everyone does "bad or evil things" and shouldn't be judged because of them.

4} The Black Cat

I thought the story of the black cat was a very good story. Edgar allen poe started off as a very happy man with many pets. His favorite pet was an all black cat named Pluto. But he started drinking and his mood changed and it caused for many unfortanute events to happen in his life. "I grew, day by day, more moody, more irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others. I suffered myself to use intemperate language to my wife. At length, I even offered her personal violence. My pets, of course, were made to feel the change in my disposition." Pretty soon his drinking got out of hand. One night after coming home drunk he took pluto and cut his eye out of his socket. After this happened he felt so guilty that he hung the cat on a tree on afternoon. The night when he comitted this act his home was set of fire. he thought he could replace his losses so he got another cat that kinda resembled pluto. Everything was going fine until he started to have the feelings and thoughts of hatred turn up again. One day out of rage he tried to kill the cat but ended up killing his wife instead with no remorse. "I aimed a blow at the animal which, of course, would have proved instantly fatal had it descended as I wished. But this blow was arrested by the hand of my wife. Goaded, by the interference, into a rage more than demoniacal, I withdrew my arm from her grasp and buried the axe in her brain. She fell dead upon the spot, without a groan." This and many others is a perfect example why all people arent 100% good.

5} The Raven

I really liked the story of the Raven and a couple of things stuck out to me like everything that was happening in his life was going wrong. After his wife died he was never happy again. I think that’s was the raven reason on being there for because he was never going to have a life again. He had no one to care for him or nothing to live his life for, because he was probably just going to be old and lonely. Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,"Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, "Lenore?"This I whispered and an echo murmured back the word, "Lenore!"--Merely this and nothing more. The Transcendentalisms would disagree with this because they think that what everyone thinks and says, is what god wants you to. They think that its the voice of god. This story is not Transcendentalism because it’s not saying that people’s thoughts and intuitions are the voice of good. For example the raven that appeared in his eye was just in his imagination. I personallydont think that the raven was real, I think that it was all in his head, and that his mind was playing tricks on him. I think he knew that he was never going to be happy again because he has been through so many things.

6} In the Poem The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe, he used darkness as a symbol in symbolism. He proboly used darkness a symbol of being alone, or being scared. "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before." I also think the raven represents death "Wretch," I cried, "thy God hath lent thee, by these angels he hath sent thee Prophet! said I, "thing of evil!--prophet still, if bird or devil! And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreamingAnd the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadows on the floor; And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floorShall be lifted--nevermore!" This supports my idea that the bird represents death.

7} I believe i am addressing these standards by taking direct eveidence from stories and putting in it into my own work.

Realism
8}
a) Some details in the Story of an hour by Kate choplin would be when the wife finds out her husband is dead and she runs upstairs. They start describing the scence and what the charcter is doing. "There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the clouds that had met and piled one above the other in the west facing her window.
She sat with her head thrown back upon the cushion of the chair, quite motionless, except when a sob came up into her throat and shook her, as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams.
She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength. But now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought."

b) The social issue I think that choplin wants to solve is why woman disliked their husbands and why women have to live through their husbands. When the woman found out her husband was dead she was actually very happy. The day before she prayed that she wouldn't have a long life, but after she found out she quickly said a quick prayer hoping to life a long life. "There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself. There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature. A kind intention or a cruel intention made the act seem no less a crime as she looked upon it in that brief moment of illumination.
And yet she had loved him--sometimes. Often she had not. What did it matter! What could love, the unsolved mystery, count for in face of this possession of self-assertion which she suddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being!
"Free! Body and soul free!" she kept whispering.

9}
a)I really think the story started to show detail when he was beated by Mr covey and he walkeed to his maters house seven miles away. "I then presented an appearance enough to affect any but a heart of iron. From the crown of my head to my feet, I was covered in blood. My hair was all clotted with dust and blood; my shirt was stiff with blood. My legs and feet were torn in sundry places with briers and thorns, and were also covered in blood. I suppose I looked like a man who escaped a den of wild beast, and barley escaped them. The writer is telling us all the details because he dosent want us to have to imagine anything. Thats why this descriptive part is realism.

b) The social issue the writer is trying to get us to solve is about slavery period. "About three o'clock of that day, I broke down; my strength failed me; I was seized with a violent aching of the head, attended with extreme dizziness; I trembled in every limb". ."I told him as well as I could, for I scarce had strength to speak. He then gave me a savage kick in the side, and told me to get up. I tried to do so, but fell back in the attempt. He gave me another kick, and again told me to rise. I again tried, and succeeded in gaining my feet: but, stopping to get the tub with which I was feeding the fan, I again staggered and fell". This descripive paragragh shows how bad slavery is and how they enforce cruel labor.

10} An example of modern realism would be the movie Pearl harbor. This is realism because it shows how the war happened, news in about the war during this time, and a true reactment of how the war really happened. Fo instance in one scence of the movie it shows the japenese preparing for the attack on pearl harbor and how none was expecting the attack because it happened early in the morning and everyone on the base was sleeping.

11}
a) I think I like realism better than Dark Romanticism
b)My Car wreck.
Many teens often get in car wreaks when they first start driving. Here is how mine happened.
I was driving one night to go and pick up a friend to take him and get something to eat. Well I stopped at a three way stop at a stop sign and waited for awhile. As soon as I take off, Im hit by a big SUV and went flying into a bus stop with benches. The damage on my car was horrible. My whole bumped was pushed into he right side, the hood of my car was so smashed in I could not even lift my hood. My wind shild was cracked and my car was making funny kind of sound. In the end of the whole situation my car was totaled and the other persons car only suffured a minor dent by the right head light.
c) I think my story is a good example of realism because I described what was going on that night and the total damage of my car. I didnt just say I got into a car wreck one day. I told everything that happened bacause I didn't want the reader to have to imgine anything.

12}ELAALRL1 The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events and main ideas) in a variety of texts representative of different genres (i.e., poetry, prose [short story, novel, essay, editorial, biography], and drama) and using this evidence as the basis for interpretation.ELAALRL2 The student identifies, analyzes, and applies knowledge of theme in a work of American literature and provides evidence from the work to support understanding.ELAALRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.ELAALRL4 The student employs a variety of writing genres to demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of significant ideas in selected literary works. The student composes essays, narratives, poems, or technical documents.

I think I have addressed the standards by by doing questions eight and nine and providing direct evendience on them. I also wrote a short story and provided a reason on why I though it was a great example of realism.

Essay number Two

Snapped

In my spare time watching TV is something I love to do. I really enjoy watching reality TV. One of my favorite shows is called Snapped. This show is about people snapping and committing horrid murders. The show investigates how the murders, happened and where it took place. I like this show much more than similar shows like Americas Most Wanted because this is the only show I know that tells the whole story and also shows the real people who committed the crime.
Snapped starts off by introducing the people involved in the murder and going into their backgrounds. They tell where the person was born, their parents’ names, where they lived, their childhood, if they have gotten married, and how many kids they had. They also start by having people who knew the victim or suspect talk about them. Having this information about them is really interesting to me because many people may think all criminals come from the same background. It’s really interesting to see that most of them come from all different backgrounds. For instance I can remember this one time; there was a show about pure blood aristocrats, the Du Pont family.
The Du Point family is an American family descended from Pierre Samuel Du Pont De Nemours. The son of a Paris watchmaker and a member of a Burundian noble family, he and his sons, Victor Marie du Pont and Eleuthère Irénée du Pont, immigrated to the United States in 1800s and used the resources of their Huguenot heritage to found one of the most prominent of American families. Well further on down the line of the Du Pont family the heritress had her son’s girlfriend murdered and stuffed into a trash bag at a Las Vegas hotel room because she didn’t want her to get any of the inheritance. So as you can see many of these cases involve many different people from all types of backgrounds.
After the show goes on, it then goes into the trial and the consequences that happen after it. People may think these people go to prison for a long time, but many of these people get off with just a couple of years or no time at all. One example of that would be an episode I can remember watching about a woman named Ruth Ann Myers. She was prosecuted for solicitation to murder. She tried to hire a hit man to get rid of her husband who wanted to divorce her and a strong political opponent. They caught her red handed; they had phone records, pictures of her car, pictures of the money she took out of her account and everything. Well things didn’t look so good for Ruth Ann, but she wasn’t going down without a fight.
When it was time to go to trail she changed her physical apprence greatly, no make up, no nice clothing, jewelry or anything. She didn’t even do her hair. She pleads Not Guilty and said she was suffering from mental health since her father sexually abused her when she was younger. All in all when the trial was over Ruth Ann was only sentenced to two 18 month sentences. After that she lost everything, her political career, her husband ever one of her children, her son Joshua, who was a stockbroker who died in the September 11th attacks.
All in all I think Snapped is definitely a good interesting show to watch, because it tells about the background of the suspect to let you know what type of environment they came from. They talk about the crime and exactly how it happened, and also testimonies from real people who knew the suspect or the victim and the trial and consequences.

Unit Two

1. Theme is the message or a story, writitng, poetry or any written assigment. The standard wants us to anyalize and provided evidence of the theme to show that we understand.

2. In the story Rip van Winkle the parts that I found particularly Romantic was how he slept for 20 years and he thought it was only one night. They also use nature alot in the story to describe the settings like the Kaatskill mountains an the hudson river. Rip van winkle was also a very common person instead of a prince or king like the european stories.

3.The poem was talking about nature, death and imagination. For instance when they were talking being scared of death you should go outside and listen to what mother nature has to say. Also they are talking about common people compared to princes and kings. They talked about when everyone dies the same thing is going to happen to everyone. they also focous on imagination because its talking about mother nature talking to you. The poem refers back to the main themes of romanticism because it reflects to nature and focuses on imagination. When he says " She has a voice of galdness, and a smile." We all know nature can't talk so its focusing on imagination. and "Thou shalt lie down with patiachs of the infant world- with kings, the powerful earth- the wise, the good, fair forms, and hoary seers of ages past,"He was saying no matter who you are nobodys different when they die you are all going to die the same way

4.
ELAALRL1 The student demonstrates comprehension by identifying evidence (i.e., examples of diction, imagery, point of view, figurative language, symbolism, plot events and main ideas) in a variety of texts representative of different genres (i.e., poetry, prose [short story, novel, essay, editorial, biography], and drama) and using this evidence as the basis for interpretation.
ELAALRL2 The student identifies, analyzes, and applies knowledge of theme in a work of American literature and provides evidence from the work to support understanding.
ELAALRL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to their contemporary context or historical background, as well as to works from other time periods.

We addressed the above standards by reading rip van winkle and the poem and being able to idetify the the three main themes of Romanticism.

The Transcendentalists.
5. Nature by ralph waldo Emerson
This story is about nature and the world of humans and how they work. I think that the people feel in this story feel that work is the only way to keep every day life going easy. Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson The story Self-Reliance is talking about work and trusting noone was taken so seriously. The story is also talking about the way boys were raised to be men and working to them was a way to show their strength and manhood. "A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best". This is a great example of how much work ment to them.

6. Nature by Ralph Walso Emerson is a good example of Transcendentalism because its talking about nature being in touch with their surroundings. In Self-Reliance I think this is a good example of Transcendentalism because its talking about growing up and being in touch with your mind and aslo the value of hard working.

7. You can apply Transcendental philosophy to the man in the video because he loves being around nature and himself. He uses his hands and hard work to survive in the wilderness alone. Its really peacful there just like in most stories, and he did every thing on his own and he is a commom man. A dirct quote would be ‘‘A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best’’

Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy

For many students attending Clarke County’s Classic City Performance Learning Center, the attendance policy clearly states that students can miss no more than four days of school for the entire semester. Students who miss more than four days will be automatically dropped from their class or classes. I think this policy is more harmful to students than helpful. I myself and many other students have had many problems with this policy. I think the school board should extend the attendance policy for many reasons.

Students may miss more than four days and may be forced to drop from the class, which delays their graduation. What if a student is able to do all the work but misses more than four days? This often happens with many students. Students complete all the work and get passing grades for the course, but they get no credit for the class because of too many absences. What’s the difference between these students and students who’ve gotten a lower grade but get to carry on because they didn’t miss that many days? This can be a real disadvantage to students who did as just as much work but can’t carries on because of their absences.
What if a student wants to take a planned family vacation? Students should be able to take vacations like these with their family, especially if it was planned in advance. If a student is leaving to go on a planned family vacation, they could go to all their teachers and get their make up work and turn it all in when they come back from their vacation. This is an alternative plan other than just not letting students go period.

Many other students here at classic city have children or other siblings they have to help take care of. Members of the students family may be sick causing the student to be absent from school their self. Students also may have family emergencies, like death in the family, member in the hospital; a member may be sick or anything of that nature. Students would not be able to give a doctors excuse or excuse for anything like that. The School board should also start excepting excuses written by the parents or guardians. You cant always except for students to have a doctor’s excuse for everything.

Many other students may miss more than four days for legitimate reasons but may not be able to provide that proof. Many students do not have any insurance, so how may I ask you can they get a doctors excuse when they can’t even go to a doctor and get proper health care? This goes back to my other point that students should be able to get their parents to write them excuses with their parents or guardian signature and be approved by administration. I know the administration thinks that this could be a big issue considering students may write the letter themselves and sign their parent’s name. That’s why I propose when turning in a letter the parent provide phone number or email address to provide verification that the student has been out due to legitimate reasons.

As you can see there are many reasons for a student attending Classic City High School to miss more than four days due to sick leave, family vacations and many other private reasons. The school board needs to get the attendance policy fixed so that more students can strive to do better because as you have just read many students graduation gets stopped or delayed due to this big inconvience.

Unit One

1 The standards are saying that we should understand the literary works by relating them to three things, their historical background, contemporary context, and as well as literature from other time periods.

2While living I want to live well.I know I have to die sometime, but even if the heavens were to fall on me want to do what is right.
There is only one God looking down on us all.We are all children of the one God.God is listening to me.The sun,the darkness, the winds, all are listening to what we now say..."

3This poem is talking about living right and living well even if you do die soon. Its also talking about how god is looking down on us and listening to what we have to say now.

4The Native Americans and The Purtians had two totally different types of views on God. The Native Americans believe in going to heaven and that god is looking down on us and the Puritans believe that everyone is basically going to hell except a certain few. For example because of Adam and Eve The Puritains believed everyone was born a sinner and Jesus didn't die for all. They also believed god saved only a certain few and there was no way to earn god's grace. For example saint Jonathan Edwards spoke in his sermons that "Natural man are held in the hands of god over the pit of hell. They deserve the fiery pit and are already sentenced to it. God is dreadfully provoked, his anger is as great towards them as to those that are actually already suffering the executions of this fierceness of his raft in hell." The Native Americans also believed there was one god looking down on us and that we are all children of god and the sun, the winds, and the darkness are all listening to what we say. For example in the poem I've recently just read it said "There is only one god looking down on us all. We are all children of the one god. God is listening to me. The sun, the darkness, the winds, are all listening to what we now say..."

5Puritians-The people who first came over to the us, they believed everyone was born a sinner, they also believed god was responsible for everything and people shouldn't concern themselves with such things.
Native Americans- the people who are indigenous to the Americas.
Jonathan Edwards-a priest who told sermons like Sinners in the hands of an angry god. He believed everyone was going to hell except a certain few.
Rationalist- a group of people in who wanted to explain nature through science and achieve order for self improvement.
Deism- Faith based on science and math. The people believed in god, not just as a power that controlled everything though.
Age of Reason- A time in the 18th century where people didn't except that god was responsible for everything.

6There is a very big difference between the Puritians and the Rationalist. For instance the Puritians are a very religious group of people. The Puritians believed that god was directly responsible for everything. The Puritians also believed that god was very angry with them and they didn't want to make him even more angrier by meddling into his business. The Rationalist though didn't believe that god was angry or that god was responsible for everything. The Rationalist sought out to improve their lives through science and mathematics. They believed that god created the universe but left it up to the people to figure out the natural laws. In today's society I have seen some of these same ideas in cases like, evolution.

7In the autobiography, Benjamin Frankilin starts keeps a notebook full of data to help himself get better with his moral perfection. This is a good example of a Rationalist because he is keeping data and analyzing things for himself instead of praying to god like a puritian would do.

8. My Thirteen Virtues
1. Staying out of trouble.
2 Staying on task at school
3 Not going to bed too late at night
4 Find a job
5 Stop smoking
6 Calm down, stop getting so angry so quick
7 Respect my peers
8 Study much more
9 stop procastination (very bad habit)
10 being more organized
11 make more money
12 order
13 tranquility

These are my thirteen virtues, I think if I can reach my potentials or goals if I follow what I say I'm going to do. These virtues would mak me a much better person in life and help me with my self improvment.

9. I adressed standard number one when I did the poetry with that native americans and showed the evidence. I also adressed standard number three when I did my thirteen virtues, when I did the Puritians vs the Rationalist and also the Puritans vs the Native Americans.

Georgia Performance Standards

I think the above standards means that we comprehend literature like short stories, novels, essays, and drama. It also means we need to show evidence as the babsis for interpretation to show that we understand.
